Morgan City is the home port to more than a thousand fishing boats and what may be an equal number of workboats. It has a unique waterfront with a concrete seawall to keep out the floodwaters. Berwick is directly across the waterway from Morgan City. Just look for the historic red lighthouse. Built in 1856, the lighthouse guided vessels around the reef and into the main channel of the Atchafalaya River. The area includes the 800,000-acre Atchafalaya Basin, one of the nation's largest natural water systems, which offers excellent recreational activities.
