San Salvador, at roughly 12 by 6 miles, is a unique mix of hills, lakes, beautiful beaches and stunning reefs. Saline creeks and lakes make up most of the interior land area. The island is known for its rich history including that it is the alleged first landing of Christopher Columbus after his 1492 Atlantic crossing.

Rum Cay, a 9 by 5-mile chunk of an island, has a reassuringly solid appearance from the ocean. Its surrounding reefs are tucked close to its shoreline. Only one reef, extending 2 nm north from the northwest tip, is a significant offshore hazard. The inshore reefs, however, have claimed many vessels over the years.
