Bayfield, WI
The resort village of Bayfield on the mainland, which touts itself as the “Best Little Town in the Midwest,” is also the commercial base for the Apostle Islands.
This picturesque village (many of its buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places) was established in 1856 and prospered during the latter part of the 19th century. The impressive 1883 County Courthouse houses the headquarters and visitors center of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (715-779-3397).
Bayfield has a number of the restaurants and shops that are typical of towns catering to the tourist trade.
