Oshawa began as a fur-trading site in the early 18th century. When a permanent community formed, it was named Oshawa from the native dialect, meaning "that point at the crossing of the stream where the canoe was exchanged for the trail." This point is still important as the city's excellent harbor facilities continue to contribute to the economy.
