Peace of Mind: Darien, GA

On a chilly weekend in December we checked into Oaks on the River in Darien, GA to see if the vision for the resort and spa had been fulfilled. Just a week before Christmas, the hotel was decorated appropriately and staff were in a festive mood. Short days and long nights allowed us to immerse in the winter quiet of coastal Georgia.

Oaks on the River

Oaks on the River is the culmination of several years of planning and dedication by Art Lucas, who grew up in McIntosh County, and maintains a home there. A short drive from St. Simons Island and about fifty miles south of Savannah, the town of Darien exudes a calm demeanor. Perched on the Darien riverfront among ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss, views across the marshes toward the Altamaha River reflect the light and natural colors of the seasons. Peace of mind prevails in this setting.

Our visit was intended to follow up on an offer by the Lucas team to experience Oaks on the River after its completion. I was at the ground breaking ceremony on a crisp February morning in 2021 and got to know Darien and the Lucas team then. My wife and I were offered the treat of a weekend to relax, review and comment when the hotel was completed.

The rooms, restaurant and lounge are delightful. Well-appointed and comfortable, the hotel is scaled perfectly for the town waterfront. The restaurant menus were executed exceptionally by the chef, morning, noon and night. Service by the staff was impeccable. A local choral group portraying Charles Dickens characters sang carols in the lobby, adding seasonal shading to our visit. Hospitality was warm and genuine by all and the pace perfect for a weekend of winding down before ramping up for holiday parties and family gatherings.

Darien is on U.S. Route 17 and is one of the oldest towns in Georgia. Rich in history, culture and coastal ambience, the town is close enough to other Golden Isles destinations to make it a perfect jumping off point for exploring. As for us, we stayed put to soak in the little town’s shops, art galleries, pubs and solitude with walks through the adjoining neighborhood squares and along the waterfront promenade.

When you go, consider a tour of the river on board Georgia Tidewater Outfitters’ boat. Captains Kim and Paul Medders are extraordinarily talented and knowledgeable guides. Scientists first and foremost, they provide a sense of awe and respect for the region’s rivers, creeks and wetlands. All topics are open for discussion and exploration. Keep it light with a wine tour, or dive into the rich history and environs of one of America’s most historic and valuable deltas.

If going home equates with peace of mind, as it does for many of us, Darien’s Oaks on the River Boutique Hotel is a Waterway Guide Preferred Destination for all of the right reasons. By boat or highway, the town and its location among the Golden Isles is now a new favorite on our list.
