- Description:
The Whale Cay Southwest anchorage is a good spot to stop before or after transiting Whale Cay Cut. There is good protection from north through east, which are the wind directions that produce the worst conditions in "The Whale."
When transiting the cut southbound towards The Sea of Abaco, the anchorage provides a unique protected vantage point of the waves breaking over the reef. It takes the guesswork out of the transit because you can merely wait until conditions look acceptable. The anchorage is also a good staging point for shallow-drafted vessels that wish to transit Whale Cay on the south side at high tide, thereby avoiding the cut altogether.
