Sand Dollar Beach is a favorite anchorage for boaters who wish to have easy access to the hiking trails and the beautiful beach on the ocean side of Stocking Island.
Located on the SE end of Stocking Island, the terrain is much flatter. The anchorage is a wide bay and there is ample room for vessels of all sizes. It is not uncommon to see mega yachts anchored in the deeper waters at the mouth of the bay. The holding is good although vessels on the south end of the anchorage will notice that the water is shallower and the bottom is slightly softer.
The anchorage can get very busy during the winter season, and it is important to not shorten scope to try and fit into a too small a space. When the winds blow a short-scoped boat can be a hazard to its neighbors if it starts to drag through the anchorage during a period of high winds. If a south wind over 20 knots is forecast, consideration should be given to moving because it is open to the south and higher winds will make the anchorage choppy. As of November 2023 the Elizabeth Harbour Conservation Partnership have installed a mooring field in the Sand Dollar Beach Anchorage. Anchoring will not be permitted within the mooring field.
