UPDATE: Folks opposing the private marina development have created a website with a link to a petition: www.savelittleharbour.org.

(Posted Feb. 9, 2015) Little Harbour (locally known as the Hurricane Hole), one of Abaco's few well protected natural anchorages and mooring fields, is the proposed site for the nearby Abaco Club of Winding Bay's 44-slip "Members Only" marina. Many cruisers beginning or ending their Bahamian cruising experience have made Little Harbour a "must stop."

Located at the southern end of the Sea of Abaco, Little Harbour provides an important protected place to wait for the next weather window and possibly enjoy the local flavor of Pete's Pub and Gallery. The proposed marina pier will extend out into the center of the harbour from the house at the west end of the harbour beach. To accommodate the structure, moorings will have to be moved or eliminated and the area available for anchoring will be significantly reduced. A 'Members Only' snack shop and sundries store are proposed to be located in the existing single family residence at the foot of the proposed pier.

A large majority of local property owners and many visitors are voicing strenuous opposition to these proposals. For boaters, this may be a safety issue, as this is an excellent harbor of refuge. Concerned and interested cruisers are encouraged to send comments to the Bahamian Government at: Bahamas Environmental Science and Technology Commission – [email protected], attention Mr. Philip Weech, Director. Subject line should read "Abaco Club Little Harbour Marina."

This seems to be another issue of those with the means trying to exclude those without them. Why does it always have to come down to finding ways to exclude others? The "I want/have mine and to hell with the rest of you" attitude needs to be readjusted.

This is a terrible idea destroying what nature has given us all for the pleasure of the few. Everyone please respond to the government.

Horrible and stupid idea. Hope the authorities don't forget who supports the Bahamas year in and out... The cruisers. We respect the Natural beauty and envoirnment. Private clubs come and go. Big mistake short and long term

No, Please, just No. For all the reasons stated by the posts before me. How many of these boats will be Sport fishers with their own captains and their freezers ? How long before they have a tournament? How much fuel will spill and bilges pump? What will they wash them with? Think about the bottom paint, etc. Wanna be Walkers Cay? It's a small place and they would take a huge percentage of it. No, Please, just No.

It's bad enough that Abaco Club would think of doing this, but to add insult to injury, it would be a private marina - none of us boaters could even use it. It would add nothing to the Bahamian economy. The only benefit would be to Southworth, the new owners of Winding Bay. I hope everyone who posts here will also send their comments to David Southworth at [email protected].

This is a horrible plan! There will be fierce opposition to this idea. The mooring field and the dock system that the Johnston's maintain is adequate for cruisers, day trippers and locals. Winding Bay boaters (which are very few) could help the micro economy of the Harbour by working out a solution with existing boat storage. The approval of this is probably bought and paid for in Nassau. This 44 boat, 400' + dock will most certainly be a blight to Lil' Harbour, especially when the money runs out and is left derelict after the first good blow.. We sure hope for the people that call this beautiful place their home that this never occurs.

have had wonderful time at little Harbour saw Many boats at anchor should stay as is and not a private domain.rnAfter all we have many boaters that will be left out if this project is allowed.

This should not be allowed. There comes a time when decisions need to be made in the best interests of the people, the country and the habitat instead of in the interests of money. This is one of those times.

Little Harbour with forty plus slips will ruin the ecological balance that exists there. These folks from “The Abaco Club” only care about one thing, their selfish existence. I would highly suggest that this thought be reconsidered.

Extraordinarily bad idea.

What is with these people who got plenty money? They think the rest of us is just supposed to sit around and accept whatever they want to do and not say anything? They wrong!!!! If the owners want a marina so bad let them build a breakwater between The Bluff and Sugar Cay and put their precious marina on some of the land that the government partially gave to them but, no they want to inconvenience other people because they just don't care as long as they get what they want!!! The government should not pass this for Little Harbour or anywhere else for that matter, more so without getting the PEOPLES opinions on this and act for the PEOPLE this time instead of how much money they could put in their pockets under the table!!!! I could go on but I got to get back to work!!!!!

This is such a special place just like it is. Please do not change it and ruin it.

Please, please, PLEASE DO NOT BUILD THIS. This breaks my heart. Little Harbor is a special place, a little off the beaten path, and we like it that way. Let people come enjoy it the way they always have. Who ever thinks this is 'good' for anything obviously is not a part of the history or the community of this unique place. There are so few places like this left, please don't destroy the magic of place I grew up.

We first came to Little Harbour as cruisers and returned again and again, charmed by the natural beauty and the interesting local residents who have taken care over the years to preserve this haven, much as the homesteaders of the 1950's did. This is a quiet enclave. The proposed 44 slip marina is out of scale, it is unnecessary and it threatens our tutrtle sanctuary, as well as the very character of this settlement.

Little Harbor has been my home for 20 years. Having a Marina with 44 slips is just unthinkable, the harbor is a safe haven when a storm is coming for many boaters from near and far. Also the marina and 'restaurant' will be private and only members from Winding Bay will be allowed there. This is not right
Comment Submitted by John Ryerson Bredin - February 9, 2015
What is proposed is a serious problem for Little Harbour and everyone who enjoys it as it is if it goes through. The bottom line to the arguments against it is that it's a completely unreasonable expansion of use of a single family residence as well as zero consideration for the natural peace and beauty of Little Harbour.
